FACTS AT A GLANCE
BORN: 19 Dec 1893 - Courtland, Minnesota
MARRIED: Magdaline "Lena" BOFENKAMP
DIED: 18 Aug 1924
         Blackfoot, Idaho

Arthur Charles Schlottman was the sixth of nine children born to Henry and Sophie Schlottman. He married Lena Bofenkamp and they had 3 children.

Arthur's brother-in-law, David Earl Richardson, opened a second general store in North Dakota and convinced Arthur to run it for him, a relationship that worked well for both of them for several years. Lena became a second mother to Earl's daughter, Nora. Nora became an older sister to Arthur's daughter Laura.

Arthur's life began to unravel in 1922, when Laura was struck by an automobile and died. Arthur's health began to deteriorate soon thereafter. Family histories state that he had contracted Syphilis as a young man and left untreated over the course of many years, the disease began to affect his mind and then his body.

Lena and Art were together in 1922 when Laura was killed, but had separated by the birth of their third child, Betty, in 1923. Lena moved, pregnant and with their son Eugene to southern Minnesota (near Ellsworth) where Lena worked for the local telephone company. Art died in 1924, having moved back to Idaho. It is unclear if Art ever saw Betty before he died.

There are no reports that any of his three children, or Lena, ever contracted or were treated for syphilis.
