Robert Love
Abt 1695 - 1741

FACTS AT A GLANCE
BORN: Abt 1695
         Craigatempan, County Antrim, Ireland
MARRIED 1: Jane
MARRIED 2: Agnes STEVENSON
MARRIED 3: Mary MONTGOMERY
DIED: OCT 1741
         Lancaster County, Pennsylvania

Robert Love was born sometime around 1695 in Craigatempan, County Antrim, in what is now Northern Ireland. Several listings show Robert's birthplace as being Dublin in County Antrim, but this is most likely incorrect: first, because Dublin is not in nor near County Antrim; second, Robert's parents were both from County Antrim and the adjacent County Tyrone in the north; and thirdly, because the Loves were Protestant they were much more likely to live in Protestand-dominated Northern Ireland than in the Catholic-dominated southern and central portions of the island where Dublin lies.

Robert is known to have married at least three times. The first marriage was most likely to Jane, the second to Agnes Stevenson and the third to Mary Montgomery. The only wedding time and place given is April 7th, 1720 in Craigetempam. Since Mary was born in Pennsylvania, a Craigetempam wedding is not likely to refer to Robert's third marriage, which most likely occured after he emigrated to America half a decade later.

Robert's daughter Mary was born in Ireland in 1725 and Robert's son Joseph was born in Pennsylvania sometime around 1728. Robert emigrated to America sometime during this three year window. Joseph was Mary's son and so Robert's third marriage probably occured within one or two years of his arrival in the colony of Pennsylvania.

Robert had at least ten children with his three wives. The exact order of birth is debated, however one convincing article listed sons James, John, William, Robert and possibly Alexander as having been born in Ireland and sons Thomas, Joseph and Samuel having been born in America. It is known that Joseph and Samuel were definately born in America and so this ordering is quite possible.

Robert died in the late summer or fall of 1741, most likely October although some records indicate he died as early as August. His will was read on November 3rd, 1741 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

One note of clarification. Many records refer to Robert's activities in Chester County and others refer these same acts occuring in Lancaster County. A portion of Chester County was split off by an act of the Pennsylvania Legislature in 1729 to form Lancaster County. There is no evidence to suggest that Robert physically moved his family to Lancaster or anywhere else following the birth of his son Joseph in Chester County, which occured in or about 1728.
