Ruth Emma Kuster was born in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Her father farmed near town but because he leased the land he worked, Ruth never lived in the same house for more than a few years at a time. Ruth was a very spirited woman, which pleased her father a great deal.

Ruth met Mathew Lagerberg while he was attending the University of North Dakota and he worked for the Kusters during the harvest to bring in a little extra money for school. Ruth and Matt married in 1933 and moved to Douglas, North Dakota, where Matt taught. A few years later, they moved to McClusky. Shortly after the 1940 Census, they adopted a child.

Ruth and Matt move to Alpena, Michigan in 1943 where he first teaches social studies but later gets a job with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. Ruth works for the Michigan Employment Security Commission.

Matt dies in 1963, at the age of 57, and Ruth retires in 1974.

Ruth has at least one notable relationship after Matt's death, telling her Dakota relatives that she married Donovan Amstutz (though her obituary lists him as a special friend). Ruth lives to be 87 years old.

Ruth is buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Alpena, Michigan.
