Lois Irene (Kuster) Maier was a self-taught accountant and mother who lived and worked in Grand Forks County, North Dakota her whole life.

Lois married Bud Maier, a farmer, a year after graduating from Central High School in Grand Forks. Their home and farm was located less than a mile from her parent's farm outside the city. Their first child, Kimberly, died at birth or soon thereafter. Bud and Lois also adopted a son and a daughter, Daniel and Kelly.

While Bud worked the fields, Lois held accounting jobs in town, first at a bus company, then at the Dakota Hotel, followed by the Veterans Club and finally for United Hospital, all in Grand Forks. While at United, Lois was promoted to Director of Accounting and in 1996 was promoted again to Controller, a position she held until her retirement in 1999. She was a member of the Hospital Financial Managament Association, rising to National President and she received a Chapter Lifetime Membership award for her years of service.

Lois was also a fine musician. She sang soprano in high school and was a lifelong pianist, performing at hospitals, at church and at other functions. In the summer, she liked to spend time at Island Lake near Lengby, Minnesota or Long Lake near Vergas, Minnesota.

Lois' husband, Bud, died in 1992 of liver cancer after a prolonged illness.

Lois died at her home in Grand Forks at the age of 75. Her funeral was held at United Lutheran Church and she is buried at Memorial Park South, both in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
