Charles Kuster was born in Lansing, Iowa in 1870, the fourth of nine children born to Samuel and Mary Kuster. Charly moved with his parents Caledonia, Minnesota (just across the state line) sometime between 1880 and 1885.

Charles married Lizzie Heymann (or Hermann) in 1896. What made this unusual at the time is that Charles came from a Protestant family and Lizzie from a Catholic family. Charly and Lizzie had two daughters and some accounts record that they also adopted a son.

Charles moves his family back to Iowa, where he is a merchant.
