Samuel Kuster was born in the Swiss Canton of Bern in 1836 and immigrated to the United States when he was 23 years old. His passage across the Atlantic was aboard the ship Mercury, which departed Harve, France and arrived in New York City on March 5, 1860. Samuel immigrated with his older brother Nicolas.

Samuel did not stay in New York long, but traveled to West Virginia, where he worked for a short time as a stone mason. Following this, he worked in a salt works in Virginia for about a year. At about the time that Virginia seceeded from the Union, Samuel moved to Cincinnatti where he farmed just outside the city from 1861 to 1869. He declared his intention to become a United States citizen in 1862.

While living near Cincinnati, he met and married Mary Louis who was originally from Canada. Samuel and Mary's first three children (Hannah, John and George) were born while they lived near Cincinnati.

In 1869, Samuel moved his family to Lansing, Iowa, where their next five children were born. The Federal Census places them there in 1880, but by 1882 he and his family were living in Houston County, Minnesota where their ninth and last child was born. In March of 1892, Samuel purchased 120 acres of land in Sheldon Township, Houston County, Minnesota from John Harrington for $440.

Samuel and Mary were charter members and regular attendees of the German Reform Church in Union Township, Minnesota. This church was later reorganized as Hope Presbyterian Church of which he was a ruling elder.

According to his death certificate, Samuel Kuster died on September 21, 1918 of a cerebral hemorrage. He is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Caldonia, Minnesota.
