Province of Skane

Åkesson is a Swedish name meaning 'Son of the Field'. It is relatively common in Scandinavia, where many Norse names are derived from nature. Okeson is an Anglicized version of that name.

The Province of Skåne (or Scania) occupies the southernmost part of the Scandinavian peninsula. It has been a part of Sweden since 1658, but culturally and historically many of the residents consider themselves more Danish than Swede. The Danish capital of Copenhagen lies a short thirty miles off the Skanish coast while Stockholm, the capital of Sweden, is more than 700 miles distant by land. Skåne is a land of vast fertile plains and deciduous forests and is one of the few parts of Scandinavia suited for agriculture.

Ola Okeson was born in the Bjock-ho-lager region of Skåne in 1836. True to his name, Ola Son-of-the-Field was a farmer. He came to America in 1882 and his wife and children arrived the following year.
