Philip Rowley served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and married within a month or two of its end. His first wife, Lily, was Jewish and they had one son (Mark) before breaking up. When Lily remarried her new husband adopted Mark and changed his surname to Lawton.

Philip married Ruth Zimmerling in 1958 and they had 3 more children in quick succession before this marriage also ended. Philip married for a third time in 1963 to Betty, and they stayed together for the remainder of his life, although there were no children from this third union.

Philip was an office manager for Pacific Intermountain Express, a trucking company. He was a member of the American Legion and supported the Humane Society.
