Harris Torgerson enlisted in the United States Navy in 1941, only 3 months before the attack on Pearl Harbor and became a pilot. For his actions during the Battle of Attu (May 1943), Harris was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on the quarterdeck of the U.S.S. Idaho by Admiral Kingman for "heroic deeds". Harris remained in the Navy for several years after the War, rising in rank to Lieutenant Commander.

Harris married Verley Dahl, the daughter of a wealthy Rapid City banker. Both Harris and Verlee loved music. Harris had a music store in Rapid City and Verlee played pipe organ in a large church. Harris and Verley lived in a lovely home and raised two children.

Harris became involved in a business deal to bring Cablevison to Rapid City but the deal went wrong and Harris was forced to sell everything. Harris and Verlee moved to Los Angeles where he worked for a company that sold organs.

Harris was buried back home at the Mountain View Cemetery in Rapid City, South Dakota.
