Melvin H. Drees enlisted into the United States Army during World War II. Assigned to the 126th Infantry 12th Division, he was killed in New Guinea on November 23rd 1942. Records for the 126th show that it was attacking Japanese positions during what would later be called the Battle of Buna-Gona at that time.

It is not known where the body of PFC Melvin H. Drees was originally interred, but it was later moved to the Philippines and buried at Fort William McKinley in Manila.
