Friedrich Georg Walther Drees was the eldest child born to Gustav and Mary Drees. Like his father, he was a farmer who lived and worked near Daykin, Nebraska. Almost all surviving census and legal records refer to him simply as "Walter".

Walter begin high school at the insistance of his parents but soon became bored and told mom and dad that he wanted to quit. Wanting to both test and discourage his resolve, his father gave him a choice: go to school or haul manure all day. Walter chose manure.

Walter married Loretta Bartels in 1940 and they started farming their own land. Loretta was a good match for Walter, his sisters often saying "Walter married a girl just like the girl that married dear ol' dad". Walter and Loretta had 5 children - all four of his sons became farmers.

Walter was killed by lightning while bringing the cattle in from pasture for milking. His death was instantaneous.
