Erwin Drees was the youngest surviving child of Henry and Hattie Drees. He was born and raised on farms in and around the town of Daykin, Nebraska and moved to nearby Fairbury when he was 6 years old. When he was about 20, he moved to Idaho with his parents and some of his siblings.

In January 1943, Ervin enlisted in the United States Army and served through the end of World War II. He was discharged on 24 October 1945. His enlistment papers list his profession as farm hand at the time he signed up.

Ervin married Ruth Lang in 1947 and they had two children: Ivan and Richard.

Ervin died in or near the town of Middleton, Idaho in 1993 not long before what would have been his 71st birthday. He is buried in Middleton Cemetery in Middleton, Idaho.
