Elmer Ernst Drees was born on October 9th 1909 in Daykin, Nebraska, moving with his family to North Dakota in 1920 where he farmed for the remainder of his life. He was described as a soft-spoken, quiet man.

Elmer married Emma Bloch in 1907 and they had three sons.

As Elmer's father, Herman, grew older, Elmer took over more of the farm responsibilities and eventually purchased the farm at what is now 17th and Washington Street from his father. The farm was sold to developers in the early 1970s and Elmer moved to Reynolds, North Dakota where he continued to farm with his sons.

Elmer died on September 5th, 1973. The official cause of death was listed as a heart attack but family members closest to him insisted he died of a broken heart following the death of his son Walter from carbon monoxide poisoning. He is buried at Memorial Park South in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
