Donald Leroy Drees was born on what was called the Tannyhill Farm near Grand Forks, North Dakota during the Great Depression. He graduated from Central High School in 1955.

Don met Diana Spidahl at a Walther League meeting at Immanuel Lutheran Church in the winter of 56-57. They were married 2 1/2 years later in the church where they met.

Don and Diana moved into a small house about 2 miles north of Thompson where Don was farming. During this time they had three children: Douglass, Dean and Darla. Don left farming after 12 years to manage the Merrifield Grain Elevator and moved the family into a farmhouse closer to work in 1970. Diana opened a ceramics business in Thompson containing mostly works of her own design. In 1982, Don formed Don Drees and Sons which included farming, construction and paving interests.

Donald was a lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church and served as President for 2 terms. He was on the board of the Thompson Rural Fire Department and the Thompson Oil Company. He enjoyed working outdoors and his hobbies included landscaping and watching college hockey.

Don reported feeling poorly when his sister Mary died in September of 2008 and was unable to attend her funeral. Several days later he suffered a stroke, from which he never regained consciousness. He died about a week later, surrounded by family and friends.

Donald Leroy Drees' funeral was held September 24, 2008 at Immanuel Lutheran Church and he is buried at Memorial Park South, both in Grand Forks, North Dakota.
