Mary Louise Drees was born on what was called the Tannyhill Farm near Grand Forks, North Dakota during the Great Depression. She attended the Merrifield Country School for six years and Immanuel Lutheran for two before attending Central High School in Grand Forks, from which she graduated in 1954. Mary received a degree in nursing from the Deaconess Hospital School of Nursing in 1957 and became a registered nurse.

Mary met Richard Hooey while she was a student nurse and they were married after she graduated in 1957. They moved to Michigan, North Dakota and then Grafton. Richard, or Dick as he liked to be called, worked for the Grand Forks Herald newspaper and then for the Minneapolis Tribune as a carrier supervisor. Mary continued to work full time until their second child was born and then worked part time. Mary and Dick had a total of four children between 1958 and 1969.

In 1973, Dick and Mary bought the Golf Terrace Motel in Crookston, Minnesota, which they operated for two years before buying the Flickerton Inn at Valley City, North Dakota. Mary took a five year break from nursing before returning to work night shifts. Mary took a disability retirement in 1995. Dick sold the motel in 1981 and worked for the next 17 years as an equipment manager at Valley City State University, retiring in 1998.

Mary was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1990 or 1991 and was successfully treated, though she did take a disability retirement in 1995. In 2005 she was diagnosed with a sarcoma which agressively spread throughout her body. While the doctors estimated she had only six more months to live, she survived another three years, passing away in September of 2008.

The funeral for Mary Louise Hooey was held on September 12, 2008 at Faith Lutheran Church and she was buried at Hillside Cemetery, both in Valley City, North Dakota.
