Albert Frank Drees Jr. was born on what was called the Tannyhill Farm near Grand Forks, North Dakota during the Great Depression. He moved, with his family, to the Art Gregoire farm when he was about seven. Albert attended school at Merrifield #115 through the eighth grade and later attended Aaker's Business College in Grand Forks. Albert began farming potatos on ten acres of land in 1948 at the age of 16.

Albert met Marion Augustin at a joint Walther League meeting between Redeemer and Immanuel Lutheran Churches. Marion taught at Immanuel and by odd coincidence, most of Albert's brothers and sisters knew "Miss Marion" before she and Albert met. Albert and Marion married in the summer of 1954 and moved to a 150 acre farm near Thompson, North Dakota where they would live for the next 45 years. They had five children.

Albert was able to purchase an additional 200 acres, and then more until he was farming about 1000 acres in 1967. In 1968 Albert and his father combined their assets to form the Drees Farming Association, which Albert's brothers Donald and John joined later. They grew seed potatos, sugar beets, wheat, barley, and various kinds of beans including soy, pinto, navy, red and black. Mustard, sunflowers and alfalfa were also grown for a few years. Albert managed the Association from 1968 until 1994.

Albert was involved with the Potato Growers Association, was President of the ND State Certified Seed Growers Association and was active in the Sugar Beet Growers. A lifelong member of Immanuel Lutheran Church, he served as Sunday School Superintendent and church trustee. He has received several awards, including the meritorious service award from the potato growers in 1998 and the National Ag Day's "We Salute You" award in 2000.

Albert officially retired in 1997, leaving his sons to manage the Drees Farming Association, but he continued to help with the planting, harvests and general maintainance on the farm and wintering in Mesa, Arizona. Albert suffered a crush injury in the fall of 2002 that put him in a body cast. By the new year, he appeared to have mostly recovered, but he began suffering chest pains on the morning of February 10th. Since he had an appointment with his cardiologist that day anyway, Albert didn't call for an ambulance and collapsed about an hour later. Paramedics were unable to revive him.
