Leo August Bringewatt enlisted in the United States Navy on May 9, 1944 and is listed on at least a half-dozen muster rolls for the U.S.S. Catskill (LSV-1). His rank was listed as MM3c (Machinist Mate Third Class?). He was discharged from active duty on May 7, 1946.

The Catskill was what the Navy called a 'Landing Ship, Vehicle'. She was the first of her class, commissioned on June 30, 1944, and would have been brand new when Leo was assigned to her. In October 1944, the Catskill successfully landed troops at Leyte Gulf for the Invasion of the Philippines. A month later she landed additional reenforcements there. In January 1945, the Catskill successfully landed troops at Lingayen Bay in the Philippines on beaches the Japanese considered too difficult for amphibious assault. In April 1945, the Catskill unloaded units from the 6th Marines onto the beaches at Okinawa. In September, she unloaded units assigned to the Occupation of Japan at Wakayama Bay. For the remainder of 1945, the Catskill carried homeward-bound servicemen from their duty stations to American shores. On February 10, 1946, the Catskill arrived in San Diego, California and she was mothballed on August 30, 1946.

By 1950, Leo was living in Minnesota. He married Helen Beltz at or about that time and they adopted two children. As a child, Leo had contracted mumps, which left him unable to father any children later in life.

Leo died in Tijuana, Mexico 1980 of Pancreatic and Stomach Cancers. He is buried at the Morningside Memorial Gardens Cemetery in Coon Rapids, Minnesota.
